The Teton Climbers’ Coalition is thrilled to introduce Zurisadai Vasquez Bedolla, the recipient of the 2024 Women’s Grand Scholarship. Made possible in part by Four Pines Physical Therapy, Women in the Tetons and Exum Mountain Guides, the scholarship underwrites the cost of an all-female guided trip up the Grand Teton.
Zuri, as she is known, embodies the spirit of adventure and resilience that defines the Teton climbing community. Born and raised in Teton Valley, Zuri grew up hearing stories of people summiting the Grand Teton, but as the daughter of immigrant parents, her time in the outdoors was limited. “Growing up, time in the outdoors was not always a priority,” Zuri reflects. “My parents were constantly working to enable greater opportunities for my sister and me.”
After graduating from the University of Utah, Zuri returned to Teton Valley with a renewed passion to explore and connect with the mountains that had always been a part of her story. Her journey has been one of physical and emotional growth, including a deep commitment to running, climbing, and recently, learning to ski. Throughout this journey, Zuri has drawn inspiration from her mentors and discovered a newfound belief in her abilities.
“I’ve learned to trust in my own strength and to embrace greater challenges,” says Zuri. Now, she is eager to pay it forward, becoming an advocate for others who may feel like outsiders in the outdoors. As a first-generation American and Latina woman, Zuri understands the importance of representation in these spaces. “My goal is to serve as a reminder that people who look like me also belong in the outdoors,” she says. Zuri is committed to encouraging her friends, family, and community to engage with the beautiful landscapes they call home.
Zuri’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusivity and inspiration in outdoor recreation. Her dedication and enthusiasm are infectious, and we are honored to support her on this incredible journey. Zuri is now preparing for the unforgettable climb of the Grand Teton, where she will join an all-female guided expedition hosted by Exum Mountain Guides.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who applied for the 2024 Women’s Grand Scholarship and to our generous sponsors, Four Pines Physical Therapy and Women in the Tetons. Together, we can continue to uplift and celebrate the women in our climbing community.
Stay tuned as Zuri embarks on this remarkable adventure. Let’s celebrate her journey and the many more to come!
