We’re excited to announce a new addition to our Safe Climbing Initiative (SCI): Climbing the Grand, a two-part course designed for climbers with prior alpine and traditional climbing experience who are considering a non-guided ascent of the Grand Teton.

Offered February 10 and February 24, 2026, the course focuses on the real-world variables climbers and followers can expect during a mid-summer, snow-free ascent of the Grand via the Owen-Spalding Route or the Upper Exum Ridge. Instruction emphasizes decision-making, movement efficiency, and risk management rather than route-specific guiding.

Both sessions run from 5:30–7:30 p.m. at the Rec Center Climbing Gym and are taught by certified guides from Exum Mountain Guides and Jackson Hole Mountain Guides. The cost of each class, which is heavily subsidized by the TCC, is $25.

Registration may be made here.

Course Overview

Climbing the Grand is intended for climbers with existing alpine and trad experience who want to better understand the terrain, logistics, and systems commonly encountered on the Grand Teton’s standard routes. The course does not replace guided instruction in the mountains, but instead provides a structured framework for preparation, planning, and technical decision-making.

Required student gear: harness; personal anchor system; alpine runners; additional locking carabiners; belay device.
